Dear Community,
Today, Transgender Law Center secured a powerful victory in Kingdom v. Trump —a lawsuit we brought on behalf of transgender people in federal prisons who have been denied gender-affirming care. The case was filed on behalf of three plaintiffs and all other transgender people in federal prisons by the ACLU, the ACLU of DC, and Transgender Law Center.
A federal judge just granted a preliminary injunction, halting the federal government’s cruel new policy that seeks to block access to medically necessary care like hormone therapy, appropriate undergarments, binders, and commissary items for trans people in custody.
The court also granted class certification, meaning this ruling protects all transgender people across the federal prison system —not just the plaintiffs in our case.
On a magenta background, white and yellow text reads, ''Today's ruling is made possible by the courageous plaintiffs who fought to protect their rights and the rights of transgender people everywhere... No person-- incarcerated or not, transgender or not-- should have their rights to medically-necessary care denied. Shawn Thomas Meerkamper. Transgender Law Center Managing Attorney''. Above the text is a yellow illustration of quotation marks. [[link removed]]
This moment reminds us of what’s possible when we fight back together – we win.
But let’s be clear: the policy we’re challenging is just one piece of this administration’s relentless attacks on trans lives. We’ll keep showing up in the courts and in our communities to demand dignity, safety, and care for all trans people—especially those most vulnerable.
This win belongs to our community—and to you. Thank you for standing with us.
In Solidarity,
Shelby Chestnut (they/he)
