Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament

The government's Strategic Defence Review, published on Monday, will make the world more dangerous and the British population poorer in the process.

Plans to build up to 12 nuclear-powered submarines, as part of the Aukus Treaty with the US and Australia, will increase tensions as an already volatile situation is developing in the Asia Pacific.

Similarly, at a time of escalating dangers in Ukraine, the government’s decision to attempt to secure nuclear-capable F35A fighter jets from the US is utterly reckless and risks this conflict again escalating to the brink of nuclear war – as we saw in November last year.

Keir Starmer continues to argue that military spending will be increased to 2.5% by 2027 and to 3% in the next Parliament. The government have made clear this will mean austerity for the British people. Meanwhile, shares of arms companies have been soaring after the last few days.

Read the Alternative Defence Review

CND has been keeping up the pressure by calling for an alternative approach that ensures genuine security for all.  "By focusing predominantly on military expansion," academic Professor Karen Bell writes in The Guardian, the SDR "risks neglecting the pressing needs of its citizens and repeating past procurement failures. It’s time for the UK to embrace a holistic security strategy that truly addresses the challenges of the 21st century."

Karen is editor of the Alternative Defence Review (ADR), a report supported by CND and the RMT union, which brings together experts to offer an alternative to the war drive narratives put forward by the government. It offers a new vision for peace, justice, and security. You can access the ADR here.

CND has also been arguing against these reckless plans on the air waves. Hear General Secretary, Sophie Bolt, on LBC Drive Time here and here.

Join the red line for Palestine around Parliament - TOMORROW, 4 June

Whilst children in Gaza are being deliberately starved by Israel, the British government continues to sell arms to this genocidal state. We say: "Where is the government's red line? If it's not starving children, then where is it?"

The government can't delay action any longer! Join the Palestine Coalition in creating a red line around Parliament for Palestine during Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday 4 June to demand the government imposes a full arms embargo and sanctions on Israel now! Please make every effort to join this critical protest tomorrow.

  • Assemble 11:30am
  • Westminster, London

Invest in Peace not Nukes: Join the protest at the Devonport Dockyard this Saturday!

We've had a huge amount of local press coverage for this protest! This is really putting pressure onto the local MP and Armed Forces Minister, Luke Pollard! Plymouth CND and CND Chair Tom Unterrainer joined Devonport residents outside his offices to protest the dangers of living next to a nuclear base and how the nuclear weapons industry brings economic deprivation, not prosperity, to areas like Devonport. Read more about the action here.

Join the Devonport demonstration
