Dear Democrats,
Last week, Vice Chair Cam Crawford and I had the honor of representing New Mexico at the Association of State Democratic Committees in Little Rock, Arkansas. We met Democrats from all 57 states and territories—each one working hard to defend democracy and take back our country from billionaires. And while it was energizing to be with fellow Democratic Party leaders, we all understood the urgent backdrop: Trump is on the rise, and the impact of his movement is already hurting real people in real ways.
We heard stories—heartbreaking, inspiring, and deeply personal—about why people got involved and what’s at stake. It reminded me of something essential: our stories are our most powerful tool.
Democrats offer bold, thoughtful solutions to complex problems. But the way we communicate can’t be complicated. Research shows personal stories are more memorable and persuasive than facts or figures. According to the Wilder Foundation and the Centre for Economic Policy Research, stories spark empathy, deepen understanding, and have a longer-lasting impact on beliefs than statistics alone.
That’s why we’re putting personal stories at the center of our work. While we were in Little Rock, a city which such an important piece of history in the Civil Rights Movement, Cam and I were inspired to share our personal stories, and now we're asking you to share yours.
What’s a Personal Story?
A personal story is a short, real-life experience that explains why you care about politics—and why others should, too. Click here for instructions on how to write a personal story.
How to Share Yours:
Set the Scene: What happened in your life that made you care about politics?
Make the Connection: How have Democratic policies helped—or how have Republican policies harming you or your community? What would you tell Donald Trump?
End With a Call to Action: Ask others to get involved—because your story is theirs too.
Keep it brief (1–2 minutes), honest, and from the heart.
We’re collecting stories two ways:
🎥 Record it and email it to [email protected], Or email Sonja to schedule a time to record a chat over Zoom.
