In 2024, Donald Trump’s campaign used an illegitimate loophole that conflicts with federal campaign finance law to withhold information about high-dollar donors from Wisconsin voters.

Trump’s campaign apparently coordinated its canvassing efforts with outside groups, and therefore was legally required to report the groups’ spending and donor information — but failed to do so.

Voters deserve to know who’s funding campaign outreach so they can make fully informed decisions at the ballot box.

The FEC should be working to ensure voters have access to more information, not less.

That’s why CREW filed an FEC complaint to close this loophole and fight for transparency in our elections. Help us continue our work by making a donation today: [[link removed]]DONATE → [[link removed]]

Last summer, the FEC released an advisory opinion that allowed wealthy donors to secretly make unlimited donations to political campaigns by authorizing campaigns to offload canvassing to outside groups.

But according to the Federal Election Campaign Act, if a campaign coordinates with an outside group to conduct canvassing, any money spent on that canvassing is a coordinated expenditure and needs to be reported.

John, campaigns on both sides of the aisle chose to exploit this loophole created by the FEC.

The Trump campaign apparently coordinated its canvassing activities in Wisconsin with outside groups, but failed to report its spending or donors.

One group, Turning Point Action, even reportedly led a $100 million-plus “chase the vote” canvassing program in the state.

However, the campaign did not report Turning Point Action’s effective donation, as required by law.

John, if the FEC doesn’t address this loophole and enforce the law, bad actors will feel emboldened to flout the law and leave the public in the dark.

That’s why CREW is taking action and demanding that the FEC take action to give voters the information they deserve.
