THE FORUM DAILY
As uncertainty around the future of immigrants in the United States continues, some foreign scientists are taking their talent elsewhere, reports James Glanz of The New York Times [link removed].

Innovation and power are at stake for the American scientific community after the recent cuts to research and an increased scrutiny of international student, experts argue.

"If things continue as they are, American science is ruined, if it becomes impossible to work with non-U.S. scientists, it would basically render the kinds of research that I do impossible," said David W. Hogg, a professor of physics and data science at New York University.

In India —a country that sends a third of the foreign students in the U.S. with a majority in science fields— the uncertainty around U.S. immigration policy is pushing young people to reconsider their plans to enroll in American universities, reports Anupreeta Das and Pragati K.B. of The New York Times [link removed].

In his piece for Forbes [link removed], Stuart Anderson examines just how much the United States owe immigrants for innovation and discovery in the different scientific fields.

According to a new analysis [link removed] by the National Foundation for American Policy, 40% of the Nobel Prizes won by the United States in chemistry, medicine and physics since 2000 were awarded to immigrant scientists.

As author Zeke Hernandez tells Anderson, "you don’t have to have compassion for foreigners to know that getting rid of immigrants is bad for us."

**‘OUR SECOND HOME’** — In a piece for The Boston Globe [link removed] , three international students outline their reasons for coming to the United States to study and their disappointment in the threatening of the American dream in recent months. Jack Masliah of Northeastern University, Yelyzaveta Zablotska of Wellesley College and Abdullah Shahid Sial of Harvard University write that "this country may not have been our birthplace, but we contribute to it — academically, economically, and culturally — because it is our second home."

**CHILDREN** — The Trump administration is facing criticism over the deportations of U.S. citizen children along with their non-citizen parents, reports Rebecca Beitsch of The Hill [link removed]. While the administration says the parents choose to take their children with them, attorneys representing the families say their clients were forced to make a difficult decision without much notice. Separately, at least three migrant children were taken into custody in plastic zip ties at the San Antonio Immigration Court in Texas, reports Dina Arévalo of MySA [link removed].

**IMPACT** — A large ICE operation at a construction site in Florida has raised concerns on the economic impact in the sector, reports TaMaryn Waters of the Tallahassee Democrat [link removed]. Experts warn that beyond the impact on the lives of the workers detained and business, it's the impact on housing cost. "When you take a massive part of the workforce away, certainly it's going to have a large impact at some point," said Brad Parker of TLG Real Estate. Separately, a raid in Arizona shocked the community after agents disguised themselves as Tucson Electric Power employees, reports Emily Bregel of the Arizona Daily Star [link removed].

**HUNDREDS RALLY** — In Massachusetts, a Milford High School student is being detained by Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) after being picked up on his way to volleyball practice, reports Katie Cole of WBUR [link removed]. Over the weekend, hundreds in Milford gathered to support the young man and demand his release, reports Logan Hall and Paul Burton of CBS News Boston [link removed].
