Dear John,

Amid all the executive orders, funding cuts, lay offs, and ICE raids that millions are experiencing this year, communities and families in every zip code and geographical region are coming together and working to better their communities and fight for what is right.

While it is sometimes hard to stay positive in times like these, we find hope in the power of communities and everyday people who continue to forge ahead. This month’s Frontline Temp Check is dedicated to them. People like you, in communities spanning every landscape. Those unsung heroes who care for their families, tend to their neighbors, and rally for their communities are holding us together.

We see the results everyday. In fact, it is pressure from communities that stopped the selling off of public lands to oil and gas interests and language that could have been used to destroy non-profits, from being included in the recent budget bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives.

However, there is still much more that remains in the bill that we must come together and raise our voices against. Now is the time to show our strong opposition to the current version being considered in the Senate because it will have devastating consequences for families and communities in every zip code. From tearing families apart to jeopardizing the health and well-being of seniors who rely on things like Medicaid to parents who depend on clean energy jobs that will now be abandoned.

This month, [let’s come together and join millions of people who are raising their voices to stand for a sensible budget reconciliation bill]([link removed]) that invests in a strong climate and green jobs that ensure a safe and healthy future for all of us, not tax breaks for a wealthy few.

Act Now: Contact Your Senators to Protect Your Family, Community, and Safeguard A Healthy Future for Us All

At the end of May, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the budget reconciliation bill by just one single vote. This proposed legislation now heads to the U.S. Senate to be considered, amended, and voted on sometime between now and the end of the summer. That means now is the best time to let your senators know what you and your community think of it!

If passed as is, this budget will be a gut punch to hardworking families. Slashing vital services – the very things that keep our communities afloat – is unconscionable. It prioritizes billions for defense contractors and billionaires, while leaving families, seniors and our neighbors struggling to afford groceries and facing the impacts of climate change with fewer resources. Clean water, climate resilience – all sacrificed so the wealthy can get wealthier. We need a budget that protects our families, not the pockets of the privileged.

Members Gather for Annual Assembly to Center Communities and Chart a Collective Path Ahead

At the beginning of May, CJA concluded its Annual Member Assembly that brought together the majority of our alliance to ground in community-led visions for the short and long-term given the current local, state and federal landscape.

We broke bread together, held strategy discussions, and shared work being led by local communities across the country, U.S. territories and Tribal territories. Members spoke about everything from Just Recovery, resiliency hubs, locally controlled renewable energy projects to corporate accountability and polluter pay campaigns like the $50 million settlement from Chevron won by communities in Richmond, California where the assembly took place.

Members left with a shared sense of recommitment to fortify trust, relationships, and solidarity among the alliance to power us ahead through the next few years.

Supreme Court Ruling Weakens Environmental Safeguards, Communities Continue to Fight Back

Last week, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled to limit the scope of environmental reviews for major infrastructure projects under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). This 50 year old, bedrock environmental law provided important recourse to communities in the face of polluting or dangerous industry, requiring companies to engage with them and giving them the right to due process. It also ensured that the impact on communities was considered.

In response to the justices’ decision—one that threatens vital protections against harm and pollution from countless future projects—CJA’s Executive Director, KD Chavez, stated:

“Imagine approving a new drug without considering its side effects—yet that’s exactly the future the Supreme Court is steering us toward. By gutting the National Environmental Policy Act, the Court is telling us to ignore the full consequences of fossil fuel projects, as if pollution and climate impacts stop at a project’s fence line.

Air and water don’t recognize borders, and neither should our reviews. This decision silences community voices and abandons our responsibility to protect public health and the planet.

We will continue to push for policies and legal tools that center the health, safety, and rights of people over the convenience of polluting industry.”

This month we also celebrate #PrideMonth as we stand with LGBTQ+ communities in the fight for justice — because climate justice is social justice.

From frontline resistance to bold leadership, LGBTQ+ voices have always been at the heart of climate action. [Share on IG]([link removed]).
