Last week, GOP Sen. Joni Ernst said the quiet part out loud at a town hall.
When a concerned constituent pointed out that people would die as a result of Republicans' devastating proposed cuts to Medicaid, Ernst's response wasn't concern. It wasn't urgency. It wasn't compassion. It was a shrug, a smirk — and six chilling words:
"We all are going to die."
This is the Republican agenda in action: Prioritize billionaire tax breaks above all. Cut off lifesaving medical care from the people who need it most. Slash services families rely on — and then brush off the human cost.

It's still early in the cycle, but comments like this are a clear signal to us: It's time to take a closer look at states like Iowa and races like Joni Ernst's (who happens to be up for election in 2026!). We've seen this kind of cruel nonchalance from Republicans since the day Trump arrived at the White House. Comments like Ernst's don't just expose how dangerous the Republican agenda is — they also create real political vulnerability.
