2025 School Green Teams Winner!
The 2024-2025 school year has come to a close, and it is time to announce the winner of the School Green Teams Program. Keep Fort Worth Beautiful is proud to announce *Johnson STEM Academy* as this year's winning school!
Each school year, schools across Fort Worth have been learning about environmental stewardship; and through KFWB's School Green Teams Program, students take their learning to action. Participants complete various environmental preservation and beautification activities that enrich curriculum, encourage school and community stewardship, and inspire generations of environmental awareness. There is also a friendly competition between teams, to encourage participation. This year’s School Green Teams have all worked diligently to complete different environmental activities, such as litter control, beautification, recycling, waste reduction, and sustainability.
Johnson STEM Academy took the lead against litter on their campus and participated in our annual Neighborhood Litter Stomp. Students cleaned up areas around their school, including the campus grounds and track, which helped create an overall cleaner space for their community. Keep Fort Worth Beautiful commemorated the winning school with a tree planting and provided students with green kits filled with environmental swag.
Keep Fort Worth Beautiful would also like to acknowledge Harmony Science Academy and North Hi Mount Elementary School for their outstanding commitment to being environmental advocates.
As the program continues to promote and embrace environmental stewardship, the achievements of these young environmentalists highlight the positive impact they have on the community.

Big Trucks and Big Ideas at the Keller Early Learning Center
Throughout May, Environmental Services staff rolled into several Career Day Events with flashing lights, powerful trucks, and a whole lot of excitement!
Students, mostly in elementary schools, learned about the different ways our Street Sweeping and Illegal Dump teams work to keep Fort Worth clean and safe every day. The highlight of the day was a live demonstration, where crews showcased street sweepers and illegal dump response trucks in action. Staff answered the students’ many curious questions about their daily work and routines.
Each year, Keep Fort Worth Beautiful, and other Environmental Services staff, speaks with thousands of community members about keeping our community clean, litter reduction methods, proper recycling and reuse, protecting the environment, and sustainability.
Environmental Services staff are proud to engage with the local community at different events, such as school career days and other community events, to educate residents of all ages about the importance of working together to protect our community.

How to safely clean up litter this Summer
Volunteering to pick up litter is a great way to give back to your community. However, Texas summers can bring extreme heat, so it is important to take precautions while helping keep your community clean and beautiful.
Here are some essential tips to stay safe and cool while volunteering this summer:
* *Plan Smart:* Schedule cleanups in the early morning when temperatures are cooler.
* *Dress for the Heat:* Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing to help keep cool. Consider wearing a wide-brim hat and sunglasses for extra protection from the sun.
* *Don’t Forget Sunscreen:* Apply sunscreen before heading outside and reapply every two (2) hours, especially if you sweat.
* *Stay Hydrated:* Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Avoid sugary and caffeinated beverages as they can lead to dehydration.
* *Refuel Wisely:* Opt for light meals and snacks. Avoid hot, heavy meals when doing outdoor activities on hot days. Consider snacks or drinks that replenish lost electrolytes.
* *Take Shade Breaks:* Rest and cool down under shaded areas frequently.
* *Know the Signs:* Watch for symptoms like dizziness, nausea, heavy sweating, or confusion. Act quickly if something seems off.
* *Use the Buddy System:* Volunteer with a partner, and keep an eye on each other for signs of heat exhaustion.
If you would like to organize a litter cleanup this summer, Keep Fort Worth Beautiful provides free cleanup supplies all year long. Request supplies by visiting fortworthtexas.gov/departments/environmental-services/kfwb/initiatives/litter [ [link removed] ].

Breaking the Recycling Myths
The City of Fort Worth highly supports recycling; however, there are many myths out there that create barriers to the recycling process by causing confusion and spreading misinformation. From cardboard to plastics, we will dispel the myths and provide you the facts needed to make recycling easier and more effective. We will be tackling the most common misconceptions to help you recycle correctly, and make a positive impact on the environment.
Understanding the recycling facts, particularly in Fort Worth, is an essential part of our collective responsibility to the environment. Many people are not aware of how these misconceptions can lead to improper recycling practices, which jeopardizes our efforts due to accidental contamination. By educating ourselves about proper recycling practices, we empower ourselves to make informed choices that improve the efficiency of recycling programs, which helps create a healthier planet.

Breathe Easy, Fort Worth: Understanding Ozone and How you can Help
You may have heard the word “ozone” before, but what exactly is it, and why is it important?
*What is Ozone?*
Ozone is a gas made of three (3) oxygen atoms (O₃). High up in the atmosphere, it protects us from the sun’s harmful rays. However, here on Earth, at ground level, ozone becomes an air pollutant that is created when emissions from cars, trucks, power plants, and industrial sources react to sunlight.
*Why is Ozone Important?*
Ozone can be dangerous to human health, so it is important to understand how it can affect us and what we can do to minimize its negative impact.
Breathing ozone can:
* Cause chest pain and coughing.
* Worsen asthma or lung disease.
* Reduce lung function, even in healthy people.
* Cause fatigue, headaches, and throat irritation.
Some populations are more susceptible to ozone pollution health risks, including:
* Children and teens.
* Older adults, especially those with pre-existing health conditions.
* People with asthma, bronchitis, or other respiratory conditions.
* People who spend a significant amount of time working outside.
These symptoms can worsen during Ozone Action Days — when air pollution levels are expected to be unhealthy for sensitive groups. Hot summer months often experience higher ozone levels, especially on sunny, windless days.
*How can I Protect Myself from Ozone?*
The good news is that everyone can take simple steps towards reducing ozone pollution and protecting themselves.
Consider trying the following to help reduce exposure and harmful emissions:
* *Drive less*: Carpool, bike, walk, or take public transportation when possible.
* *Refuel smart*: Pump gas in the early morning or evening to reduce emissions.
* *Avoid idling*: Turn off your engine when parked or waiting.
* *Use electric equipment*: Swap gas-powered lawnmowers and trimmers for electric versions.
* Limit outdoor activities on high ozone days.
*Stay informed:* Sign up for air quality alerts at airnorthtexas.org/sign-up-for-alerts [ [link removed] ].
The City of Fort Worth works hard every day to monitor and improve air quality — but it takes all of us to make a difference. Together, we can help everyone breathe a little easier.
