Olympic View Transfer Station closed due to operational challenges

Olympic View Transfer Station closed Monday, June 2, 2025
OVTS

The Olympic View Transfer Station [ [link removed] ] is *closed today, Monday, June 2, 2025*, to allow operators to safely clear a significant accumulation of garbage from the tipping floor. The closure follows a busy weekend and recent garbage compactor malfunctions.

Last week, the facility’s aging garbage compactor was temporarily taken offline for unplanned maintenance and repairs. As a result, garbage began accumulating on the tipping floor throughout the week. Operators were unable to catch up over the weekend due to high numbers of customers, which is typical during nice weather.

While the transfer station is closed for garbage disposal, the *recycling area remains open* during regular hours. The facility will also continue to *accept tires, large appliances, and electronics* as usual.

We anticipate reopening the transfer station on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, but this timeline may change.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. Please stay tuned for updates at:

Recycling and Garbage Facilities remain open

The Kitsap County Recycling and Garbage Facilities [ [link removed] ] remain open on their normal schedules. Please note that these smaller facilities charge by volume. They are not designed to accept large loads of waste, and large loads will be significantly more expensive at these facilities.

Waste collection services not impacted

This issue is not expected to impact waste collection services provided by WM, Bainbridge Disposal, and the City of Poulsbo.

Mason and Pierce County residents

Mason County residents should use the garbage facility in Belfair, [ [link removed] ] and Pierce County residents should use Purdy Transfer Station [ [link removed] ].

New garbage compactors coming soon

Olympic View Transfer Station's current garbage compactor is over ten years old and is nearing its end-of-life, which causes frequent outages and facility closures.

Kitsap County's contractor is currently preparing to install a second garbage compactor at the facility, which will increase garbage processing time and provide backup during compactor maintenance. We expect this second machine to come online this fall.

After the second compactor is installed, Kitsap County will replace the current compactor. We have already purchased this machine, which costs around $5 million and takes eight months to manufacture.
