Remembering Tom Robbins, Who Bore Witness to Everyday New Yorkers’ Battles
Tom Robbins, a journalist whose work at City Limits, The Village Voice, Daily News, The City and other publications shone an unflinching light on "the promise and peril of New York City," as board member Andy Breslau succinctly described, passed away last week at the age of 76. ([link removed])
"What makes reporting the greatest job in the world is that you get to talk to people and hear their stories," Robbins said in a 2018 speech at City Limits’ 42nd anniversary gala, where he was honored with the newsroom’s Urban Journalist Award. "Writing for City Limits allowed me to be a witness to the battles everyday New Yorkers were waging in neighborhoods throughout the city."
Robbins "knew that kindness and optimism were journalistic assets, not handicaps," former City Limits editor Jarrett Murphy writes in tribute ([link removed]) . "Keep asking questions. Keep reading documents. Believe in the story, even if no one else does. Believe in a better world, even if it seems to be slipping away. Like water, just keep coming, constant, undeterred, unfazed."

Low-Income Households Shortchanged on State Funds for Energy Savings Programs
The state’s Public Service Commission voted this month to commit 30 percent of a $5 billion fund that goes into energy saving programs to low- and moderate- income New Yorkers. The rest will be earmarked for residential and commercial properties that are linked to homeowners or renters in higher income brackets.

Critics Say Brooklyn Terminal Plan Fails to Prioritize Public Input
“I can’t vote yes on a project in which the majority of the community doesn’t know what’s going on,” Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, who sits on the task force that will vote on a final proposal for the Brooklyn Marine Terminal, said at a rally in early April. “I’m on the task force and I don’t know what’s going on.”

After Revote, Rent Guidelines Board Considers Lower Range of Hikes on 2-Year Leases
The board, which votes each year on rent changes for New York City’s nearly 1 million regulated apartments, is now considering an increase between 3.75 (down from 4.75) to 7.75 percent on two-year leases starting Oct. 1. It’s still far from the rent freeze housing advocates want.
