Young Elected Officials Network’s 20th Anniversary Convening Was a Huge Success

Earlier this month, People For the American Way Foundation’s Young Elected Officials Network celebrated its 20th anniversary with a convening in Washington DC. Bringing together more than 150 elected officials from around the country, as well as thought-provoking speakers and panelists, the convening delivered an exciting four days of programming. Power Unchecked is Power Abused

Just a few months into his second term, Donald Trump is already moving to consolidate power and dismantle key checks on his authority. He’s nominating judges with extreme views – including one who has supported his questioning of birthright citizenship. His enablers in Congress are pushing legislation that would help Trump loyalists escape prosecution by shifting criminal cases out of state courts and providing immunity to high level executive officials. And as federal courts block parts of his agenda, senior officials in his administration are now openly discussing the suspension of habeas corpus – despite having no constitutional authority to do it. These aren’t trial balloons. They’re warning flares.

We’re pushing back with everything we’ve got – exposing these threats, mobilizing resistance, and working to defend the rule of law. But we’re up against a well-funded, coordinated machine, and we’re $3,184 short of our monthly goal. The deadline is midnight. If you believe in accountability, democracy, and standing up to authoritarian power – this is the moment to act. Chip in now and help us meet this goal.>>

We Scored a Major Victory With the Removal of Ed Martin’s Nomination

President Donald Trump was forced to withdraw his nomination of far-right activist Ed Martin as permanent U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. Trump had to abandon Martin when it became clear that bipartisan opposition to his confirmation was growing in the Senate. We’re proud that People For the American Way played a major role in helping organize a broad coalition effort, educating senators about Martin’s extremism, and mobilizing public pressure against his confirmation.

Thank you to the more than 12,000 People For members who urged the Senate to reject Martin’s nomination!

Trump Is Attacking the Foundations of Church-State Separation

Church and state are supposed to be separate – but under Trump, that line is being erased. From supporting the funneling of public funds to religious institutions to backing court decisions that chip away at First Amendment protections, the assault is deliberate and dangerous. This new op-ed from People For president Svante Myrick breaks down how Trump and his allies are reshaping the role of religion in American government – and why we can’t afford to stay silent.

Right Wing Watch: Trump Scheming to Place ‘Enforcer’ Emil Bove on U.S. Appeals Court

President Donald Trump has nominated Emil Bove, a former personal attorney and collaborator, as a judge on a circuit court of appeals – just one step below the Supreme Court. Bove has been described by the New York Times as “the main enforcer of President Trump’s demands for retribution and unimpeded control of federal law enforcement.” Making Bove a federal judge would be a major threat to the rule of law, perhaps the strongest sign yet of Trump’s contempt for the federal courts’ role as a constitutional check on his abuses of power.

As we face a growing wave of authoritarianism and anti-democratic forces, it has never been more critical to secure the future of our democracy and the progressive values that are under attack by right-wing extremists. One way to join this cause is through estate planning to protect the people and things you love, safeguard your assets, and secure a brighter future for our country.

Despite the value of planning, the process is often inaccessible, overwhelming, and expensive — especially to historically disenfranchised communities. That's why we are excited that our partnership with FreeWill offers our supporters an opportunity to create their wills, and plan their estates at NO cost to you.
