Yesterday Dominique wrote to you about how the Trump administration is weaponizing the IRS to power ICE’s mass deportation machine by sharing tax information of immigrants who have been paying what they legally owe in taxes. But it’s not just the administration that’s attacking immigrants.
When House Republicans passed their budget package, it included multiple attacks on immigrant families.
The House GOP budget cruelly targets immigrant communities while funneling hundreds of billions into Trump’s mass deportation machine.The budget excludes 4.5 million citizen and legal permanent resident children from the Child Tax Credit if one parent does not have a Social Security number,1 cuts legal immigrants off from Medicare benefits they’ve paid into for a decade or more,2 penalizes states for using their own money to provide health care for immigrants, and demands thousands of dollars in new or drastically increased fees from immigrants seeking legal status trying to reunite with unaccompanied children. It even raises fees on people seeking asylum—many of whom are fleeing violence and persecution and arrive in the U.S. with nothing. Instead of offering a safe haven, this budget makes it even more difficult for vulnerable families to find safety and stability.
When the Senate returns next week, it will take up this budget package, and we’re rallying our allies in opposition. We’re demanding the Senate reject the House-passed budget bill and pass a budget that invests in health care, nutrition, and education instead of attacking immigrants and ripping benefits away from those who need them the most.

The House budget bill also increases funding for mass deportations and immigration detention, funneling $150 billion into ICE and border militarization and $110 billion to the Department of Justice while shortchanging life-affirming programs like Medicaid and SNAP nutrition benefits by more than $1 trillion.
