Here’s the truth: after the 2010 Census, Republicans were more strategic than Democrats about the long game of redistricting and what it could mean for their party’s dominance in state and federal elections.
As a result, they won some big victories by manipulating maps to create an artificial advantage for themselves after the 2010 Census.
To fight back, Attorney General Eric Holder and President Barack Obama launched the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC) — the first-ever strategic hub for redistricting, with a comprehensive plan to level the playing field by winning fair maps.
With focused effort, we decreased the Republican structural advantage in the U.S. House from 23 seats in 2012, to 11 seats in 2020, to just three seats in 2022.
And based on that proven model, we’ve built a 10 Year Plan to win fair maps in 2032 — positioning ourselves both on the front lines against short-term threats and moving forward strategically to end gerrymandering in the long term.
As your symbol of commitment against map manipulation, can you make your first donation of any amount to power this team? [[link removed]]Our comprehensive strategy means we fight to win elections for pro-fair maps candidates. We strategically identify which races are the most important opportunities to most effectively counter gerrymandering and protect our basic freedoms. We endorse pro-democracy candidates. And we provide these Democracy Defenders with the resources they need to win.
But this work extends beyond electoral politics. The fair maps movement will continue developing sophisticated mapping capabilities to understand the impact of new maps, building grassroots coalitions, educating the public about redistricting's impact on their communities, holding legislators accountable to their voters, and advancing redistricting reforms at every level of government.
