Last week, the Supreme Court let Maine’s civil rights law stand — refusing to hear a case that would have gutted protections for transgender people in housing.

That’s a win. But make no mistake: it’s also a warning shot.

The right-wing legal machine behind this case has a clear playbook — using bogus “religious freedom” claims to create massive loopholes in civil rights law. Today it’s LGBTQ+ protections. Tomorrow it could be voting rights, abortion access, or public education.

This wasn’t a fringe case. It was backed by the same deep-pocketed networks fueling attacks on democracy across the country. They’re just getting started — and they’re not going to stop unless we make them.

We know more lawsuits are coming. At DASS, we’re building the legal infrastructure to defend them and fight back against this wave of extremist litigation.

Trump and his allies are watching where they can break the system — and pushing further every time they don’t face resistance.
