Dear Friends,

It's been a great week back home in the District after a few grueling weeks in DC with multiple all-nighters fighting to protect Medicaid, food assistance, and our economy. As I travel throughout the District, I hear concerns about grocery prices, tariffs, and healthcare coverage from constituents. It doesn't matter whether you live in Pontiac, the south suburbs, Chicago, or Danville — the dangerous cuts in the budget recently passed by House Republicans will hurt all of us.

The Republican Budget Cuts Medicaid

Last week, House Republicans passed their budget that will slash Medicaid by $880 billion, the largest cut in US history, threatening the healthcare of 13.7 million Americans and over 300,000 people in the Second District.

In a committee hearing that lasted over 26 hours throughout the night, Democrats on the Energy & Commerce Committee shared powerful stories from their constituents who rely on Medicaid for healthcare coverage. Medicaid serves as a lifeline for millions of Americans, including Kairo, who is pictured here. You can hear more about how Kairo's health is thriving due to Medicaid here.

In another overnight-marathon committee hearing, I offered my amendment to expand Medicaid postpartum coverage from 60 days to a full year nationwide. While this is optional for states, it's time mothers receive the care they need in every state, permanently.

The fight to protect Medicaid is not over. As the budget moves through the US Senate, I will continue to defend your healthcare.

My Visit to a Retirement Community

I had great conversations with residents at the Montgomery Place Retirement Community in Chicago.

Our senior citizens have seen and lived through a lot — but this Trump administration is something else. They’re concerned about gun violence, Medicaid, and social security. I appreciated all their questions, wisdom, and engagement.
