Many of these harmful ideologies have become a central focus in our halls of power — including our public education system, our legislative bodies and the highest elected office. Instead of focusing on real issues, like affordable housing, voting rights and strengthening public education, those in power have instead listened and catered to far-right propaganda. With 1,371 groups tracked in 2024, our work to dismantle hate and extremism is far from over. But when we work together not just to oppose these groups, but to challenge the very ideas that have emboldened them, we can build inclusive and safe communities where everyone, no matter who they are or where they come from, is free. For over 50 years, activists like you have sustained the Southern Poverty Law Center’s work to shut down, bankrupt, expose and defeat white supremacists. And while a new wave of extremists is attempting to make their hateful ideologies mainstream — often through violence — we won’t let them. Hate crimes are, unfortunately, still a dire threat as a result of extremist ideologies surging. And hate crime data has historically been underreported and inaccurate. Passing commonsense, forward-looking legislation is an important step towards accountability and justice for these victims.
