Hi John. I hope you're well.
Today, I felt it was important to share an update on a major budget bill that recently passed the House.
I know many people are frustrated by partisan politics. That's why I've made it a priority to work with both parties to make a difference for Kansans.
That includes passing a bipartisan infrastructure law. Thanks to this law, Kansas is modernizing U.S. 69 in Overland Park and replacing lead pipes in Olathe. I've also worked with both parties to help veteran and women owned small businesses, and much more.
But I'll also never hesitate to push back when it's the right thing to do for Kansans. And last week, I did just that by voting against the majority's extreme budget.
There's no question our tax system is already unfair. It's rigged to benefit wealthy people instead of people who work for a living. But this budget doesn't fix that. It gives tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy and large corporations while raising costs and cutting services for everyone else.
This budget rips health care away from thousands of Kansans. It takes food off the tables of hardworking families. And it does this to pay for massive tax giveaways to billionaires – at your expense. Click here to see how it'll impact Kansans.
Many Kansans are sharing their concerns about this extreme budget with me. So last week, I was glad to listen to their stories and bring their voices to Washington.
This budget isn't just out of touch. It's dangerous, irresponsible, and means higher costs for hardworking Kansans. It's all about raising your costs so billionaires can pay less.
But don't just take my word for it. This is what experts who've studied the bill are saying.
· HIGHER Health Care Costs. More than 16,000 people in our district would lose their health care under Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. It also means more hospital closures, less services, and worse care.
· HIGHER Grocery Costs. 8,000 households in our district could lose the emergency food help they rely on. 27,000 grocery stores nationwide could also be forced to close due to lost revenue.
· HIGHER Deficits. This bill would add at least $5 trillion to national deficit through 2034. That could mean higher interest rates, slower economic growth, and a debt spiral.
· LOWER Taxes for Billionaires. This extreme budget actually raises taxes on working families. At the same time, billionaires who already pay next to nothing would get even more tax giveaways.
I introduced a slate of amendments to protect Kansans and our economy. Unfortunately, each one of them was rejected due to partisan politics.
Thankfully, this budget is not yet law. But the ongoing threat is real. In fact, it would mean the largest Medicaid and emergency food aid cuts in U.S. history.
So whether we agree on every issue or not, I won't stop pushing to put Kansans first – not politics or powerful donors. Everyone deserves a government that works for them – not just for special interests, big corporations, or the extremes of either party.
It's an honor to serve you and your family in the U.S. House of Representatives. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate contact me.
My warmest regards,
Sharice L. Davids Member of Congress
