Here’s the situation, John:

California’s clean car rule was the most ambitious of its kind in the nation — a real plan to end the sale of new gas-powered vehicles by 2035. It would have slashed emissions and set a new national standard for climate leadership.

But the Senate just voted to kill it.

Here’s why it matters, John:

Republicans in Washington led the charge, and dozens of Democrats helped them. They overturned a policy that could have shifted the course of climate action and, instead, handed the fossil fuel industry a massive victory at our expense. And the consequences go far beyond one state.

Eleven other states, along with Washington, D.C., intended to adopt California’s plan and stop selling new gas-powered vehicles by 2035. They understood what’s at stake: Vehicle pollution is one of the largest sources of planet-warming emissions, and this policy was one of the few serious attempts to address it. Now it's been ripped away.

Let’s be clear: This is a direct attack on our right to breathe clean air and live in a world not dictated by oil executives and corporate polluters.
