John,
Last week, the Republican-controlled House narrowly passed Trump’s “big, beautiful” bill — which was anything but.
It takes a cleaver to Medicaid, food stamps, and clean energy initiatives, while of course giving massive tax giveaways to billionaires.
But that’s not all. In addition to being a giant gift to the billionaire class at the expense of everyone else, there are a ton of other provisions that Republicans slipped into this bill that would be disastrous for the working class.
We wanted to take a few minutes here to highlight some of the worst of them, but before we do:
Can you add your name to our petition to urge your elected officials to oppose Trump’s budget bill? With Congress on recess, and the bill due to start making its way through the Senate in a matter of weeks, we need to keep the pressure on.
The attacks on Medicaid and giveaways to billionaires may have been what made the headlines about this budget. But the bill that passed the House last week also massively increases our defense spending, attacks our democracy and system of checks and balances, and makes it harder for working families to make ends meet.
Here’s just some of what you may have missed in the 1,000 page mega bill:1
-
More funding for Trump’s mass deportation operation, including spending $46.5 billion on Trump’s border wall
-
A splurge of $150 billion in additional spending for our already bloated Defense budget including Trump’s “Golden Dome,” which experts have called “a dangerous fantasy”2
-
Changes to student loan repayment plans so that students pay more and qualify for less aid3
-
Higher prescription costs for seniors under Medicare
-
Cuts in funding for Planned Parenthood and a ban on Medicaid from covering transition care
-
And more drilling and mining on public lands.
But wait, there’s more:
-
Hidden deep in the budget is a provision that would restrict federal courts’ authority to hold government officials in contempt if they violate judicial orders.
-
This bill also includes a ten-year ban on regulating artificial intelligence, including restricting states from passing laws to prevent AI from misleading the public with election misinformation.4
-
And it gives the Trump admin the ability to define any nonprofit they don’t like as a “terrorist-supporting organization” and ending their tax status — a major threat against freedom of speech.5
This bill is not only a massive redistribution of wealth from working families to the billionaires — it’s also a sneak attack on democracy itself.
As the bill now makes its way to the Senate, the time is now to make our voices heard.
Sign our petition to urge your legislators to oppose this massive boondoggle of a bill that only serves Trump and the billionaire class at the expense of everyone else.
In solidarity,
Team WFP
