I never wanted to be a politician. I wanted to be a doctor, but I soon realized our politics were making us sick. 

My dad came to Detroit from Egypt in 1978, chasing the American dream in the state that built it — a promise that if you worked hard, you’d get a fair shot. That’s the dream that raised me. That’s the dream this country is supposed to be about.
