Dear Comrades,
Despite a clear need for
dismantling the institution of police in this country, Oakland mayor,
Libby Schaaf, has refused to defund the police. Instead, Schaff has
advocated for “reforms,” which only increase Oakland’s police budget,
already one of the largest in the nation. It is not possible to reform
an inherently racist institution that was built to subjugate Black
communities. These oppressive systems must be dismantled so that we
can collectively build an inclusive, compassionate system in its
place.
Oakland will vote on its mid-cycle budget revision this
month. We have the chance to use our collective voices to push our
city council members to reduce the police budget and increase budget
allocations towards housing, transportation, education, mental health
services, and more.
TODAY, June 16 at 1:30pm, the Oakland City Council will
meet to consider amendments to the budget.
