LOUISIANA
If you’ve ever driven down the interstate in Louisiana, you’ve probably noticed a billboard for a trial lawyer every mile or so.
There’s a reason for that — Louisiana has one of the most lawsuit-happy legal climates in the country. It’s a system that’s been criticized for encouraging frivolous lawsuits and making trial lawyers rich at everyone else’s expense.
But the Louisiana Freedom Caucus is working to change that. And this week, they made a big move in the right direction.
Rep. Emily Chenevert, a proud LAFC member, sponsored a bill — backed by the entire LA Freedom Caucus — that cracks down on lawsuit abuse by stopping people who are mostly at fault from filing a lawsuit to seek damages. The legislation pushes for more personal responsibility and is expected to help bring down sky-high insurance rates for families across the state.
Both chambers passed the bill. Now, it’s up to Governor Jeff Landry. Even though he’s a Republican, it’s not clear whether he’ll sign the bill or not. We’ll be watching — and we’ll keep you posted.
