Hey there, Giving up. Checking out. Tuning out. It might be tempting to throw up our hands and accept the damage to our democracy during Donald Trump’s four-year term as president. But that would be a huge mistake. The stakes are simply too high: Gerrymandering poses a critical threat to our democracy, and one day we will look back on this moment and ask ourselves if we did enough to resist these anti-democratic forces and defend the right to fair representation. Right now, you can respond to Trump’s first few months by being one of the action-takers — one of the defenders of our democracy — and contributing to the NDRC’s relentless efforts to advance fair electoral maps across the country.
We must not take our democracy for granted — especially as Republicans are actively working to undermine it by proposing wildly partisan maps in Ohio, trying to disenfranchise millions of Americans with the SAVE Act, and doing everything possible to create an artificial political advantage that denies the will of the people in elections across the country. As Attorney General Eric Holder has said: “Together we can change that and restore fairness to our democracy. Join our fight because politicians shouldn’t choose their voters — voters should choose their representatives.” At this very moment, we are actively involved in crucial redistricting efforts and state-level elections, and monitoring key court decisions that — and we’re not exaggerating when we say this — will help determine whether our democracy emerges from the next four years intact or in tatters. If we stay strong and work hard, we can win — together. Thanks for being part of this fight! — NDRC HQ
