Look, I get
it.
It’s annoying when political campaigns keep asking you for money. I get
the same emails you do (and not just the ones from our campaign!).
But until we fix our broken campaign finance system, it’s a necessary
evil, especially for a campaign like ours that rejects donations from
corporations, lobbyists, and Big Pharma, Big Oil, and Big Bank CEOs.
My team and I try to limit the number of emails we send to your inbox, and
we also work to write messages that are at least informative, and as often
as possible, fun.
So here’s an explanation of why we set monthly fundraising targets, like
our goal of raising $100,000 over email in May.
Most political spending on voter contact, such as TV and digital ads,
happens in the last few months right before the election—but our budgeting
happens a year or more in advance. If we aren’t getting donations until
the month before the election, we can’t buy as many ads, and we have less
flexibility to respond to dirty political attacks.
We design monthly targets to keep our campaign on track for raising the
resources we need. It’s a concrete measure of how much voter contact we’ll
be able to do. We push so hard to meet our goals, because we want to run a
campaign that speaks to as many voters as possible.
[ [link removed] ]That’s why I’m asking you to chip in
$5 today—because it actually matters. As a single mom
raising three teenage kids, I know how important every dollar is for a
family, and I never take your donation for granted.
