John, this is much more than just a budget cut. It’s a coordinated dismantling of the very infrastructure that helps American families survive extreme weather.
RFK Jr. and the Trump Administration have proposed eliminating the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). It’s a modest, effective program that helps over 6 million Americans pay their utility bills, making sure that:
Seniors don’t freeze in the winter
Children are safe during record-breaking heatwaves
Families facing financial hardship caused by an energy system that’s far too expensive can receive the support they need
The proposed 2026 budget doesn’t just slash LIHEAP’s funding – it zeros it out completely. And to make that decision permanent, the administration has placed the entire program staff on administrative leave, with RFK Jr. planning to fire them all next month.
John, this is much more than just a budget cut. It’s a coordinated dismantling of the very infrastructure that helps American families survive extreme weather, which has become even more frequent and fatal as a result of climate change. We at SEEC believe that the role of our government is to protect our people – not leave them high and dry when they need support most.
Thanks to your help in 2024, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 119th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future.
