John,

Summer is almost here, and with it will come dangerous heat waves fueled
by the climate crisis.

Hot summer days without air conditioning aren’t just uncomfortable — in
some cases, they can have deadly consequences. 27 states across the
country allow utility companies to shut off power during summer heat
waves, putting people’s health and safety on the line for the sake of
profits.^1

We’re fighting to stop the shutoffs and save lives. So far, supporters
like you have sent thousands of messages to Congress demanding a federal
ban on utility shutoffs during heat waves. Plus, we called on Duke Energy
— a major utility company that operates in some of the hottest states — to
stop their summer shutoffs.

We need to keep up the public pressure to end these shutoffs for good.
[ [link removed] ]Will you send a letter to the editor of your local newspapers to urge
your local leaders and utility companies to act? It’ll only take a minute,
and with our simple tool and pre-written template, it’s easier than ever
to make your voice heard in local media.

Private, for-profit utility companies have monopolized regional markets
across the country, often leaving consumers with no choice in who to pay
for electricity and heat.

These companies spend our money on unreliable, expensive fossil fuels that
will further burn down our planet, and on their own lobbying efforts to
slow the transition to clean, renewable energy.

Then, they raise our rates to pad their wallets and maximize their
profits, while turning off our power in seconds if we don’t pay them
enough — even during deadly summer heat waves when it could kill us.

Summer utility shutoffs should be banned everywhere, John. And
one of the best ways to get your message in front of your local leaders
and utility company is through your local newspapers. [ [link removed] ]Help stop the
shutoffs by sending a letter to the editor of your local papers now — it
