Let America Be America Again by Langston Hughes is one of my favorite poems, and I find myself frequently returning to its words in these increasingly hyperpartisan times:
O, let my land be a land where Liberty
Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath,
But opportunity is real, and life is free,
Equality is in the air we breathe.
These words still echo today. Patriotism isn’t about symbols — it’s about taking action to make sure our country lives up to its promised ideals.
It’s why I fight everyday in Congress to defend our freedoms and democracy. It’s why I’ve devoted my life to public service. And it’s why I’m respectfully asking for your help today.
