America has long been a beacon of freedom and the leading nation on Earth. But we don’t get to stay that way just because. Our continuing status as a free and leading nation is decided, over and over again, by each generation and by each successive set of leaders. And today’s leader of our government is effectively deciding to end American freedom and primacy. This nation cannot be the world’s foremost, let alone a free country, if it becomes the kind of place where universities are dismantled because they don’t align politically with the current head of the government.

The Trump-Vance administration’s war on the independence of America’s universities isn’t about higher education. It’s about power.

Universities are being singled out, not because of deficiencies in their educational results, but because of the very intellectual independence that makes higher education possible.

And that should horrify people across the political spectrum - liberals, conservatives, and libertarians - in equal measure.

No politician, regardless of party, should seek to dictate who can speak, learn, or teach, or what they are allowed to think and say. The American people bow to no king - it’s the very premise of our nation.

So, again, we face a test of whether we’re still a freedom-loving people—and we will not meet that test by staying quiet.
