Dear John,
As authoritarian states continue to reach beyond their own borders to stifle dissent, democratic governments can and should do more to ensure that fundamental freedoms are protected for everyone.
Both Canada and the United Kingdom are responding to the rise in transnational repression cases through updated policies, including increased accountability measures against perpetrator states, community engagement initiatives, training programs for law enforcement officers, and more.
However, it’s important to note that communities and activists experience transnational repression in varying ways, and greater attention should be given to the specific needs of vulnerable communities, with the aim of ensuring their resilience in the face of sustained threats.
