Breaking news, team: Republican Ohio Supreme Court Justice Pat Fischer just announced he’s challenging his colleague, Justice Jennifer Brunner, the state’s lone remaining Democrat on the court.

Fischer is playing musical chairs at the state’s highest court so he can bypass mandatory retirement rules. His term expires in 2028, but since he’ll be too old to run for reelection under Ohio’s constitutional age limits for judges, he’s running to win Brunner’s seat. If he wins, he’ll be allowed to remain on the court for an extra four years.
Fischer is vacating his seat on the court early so he can maintain power longer. A classic Republican out-of-touch power grab.
