President Trump's so-called "big, beautiful bill" passed in the U.S. House of Representatives last week. It will now move to the Senate. Most attention on this budget bill has centered around issues like the tax code, Medicaid and immigration. However, there is a lot more hidden in the House’s reconciliation proposal, including two provisions that would severely harm voters and threaten the rule of law.
The first provision would limit courts’ ability to hold government officials, including the president, in contempt if they violate a judge’s orders. This would make it easier to just ignore court rulings one doesn't like. No government official, including the president, should be able to simply ignore court rulings that find their actions illegal or unconstitutional.
The other would impose a 10-year ban on the enforcement of all state and local laws that regulate artificial intelligence (AI), including rules for AI’s use in political campaigns and elections. Simply put, this ban could mean a decade of false information that undermines the right of voters to make informed decisions.
Campaign Legal Center strongly urges the Senate to remove these provisions as it considers the legislation. If these provisions remain, the Senate must vote against the entire package. The rule of law and our democracy itself depend on it.
