*Lt. Governor Gilchrist Announces Major New Commitment to Building Homes in Michigan*

"Allen Edwin Homes unveils pledge to build 2,500 new homes priced for local workforce, supported by MSHDA and bipartisan 2023 law "

*MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich.* – Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II was joined by Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) CEO & Executive Director, Amy Hovey, and Allen Edwin Homes Director of Workforce Housing, Brian Farkas, for a significant announcement to help bring down housing costs for Michiganders.

Allen Edwin Homes will build 2,500 additional homes over the next 10 years in communities around Michigan, all supported by MSHDA’s Housing Tax Increment Financing (TIF) Program, which supports the construction or rehabilitation of housing priced affordably for families earning up to 120% of area median income.

“Every Michigander deserves to find a safe, affordable place to raise their family in a vibrant community,” said *Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II.* “Today’s announcement builds on the progress we’ve made to build almost 40,000 housing units across Michigan and brings together public and private sectors to address this critical need that affects every neighborhood. We all have a role to play in contributing to solving this. Let’s keep getting it done together.”

“The Housing TIF Program has already made a big impact in helping us confront the housing shortage, with hundreds of new housing units supported by this financing and thousands more on the way,” said *Hovey*. “We’re grateful to have partners like Allen Edwin Homes who are embracing innovative solutions to help get more homes built that are affordable for working people in Michigan to purchase.”

“The Housing TIF laws and MSHDA’s leadership have been a game-changer in helping us build more new homes in communities all over Michigan,” said *Farkas*. “We’re doubling down on Michigan because we believe this state is a place where leaders are committed to partnerships and to creative solutions.”

Prior to passage of the new bipartisan housing legislation, Allen Edwin homes constructed on average 850 homes each year. Thanks to MSHDA’s Housing TIF Program, the firm has accelerated its construction, on pace to build over 1,000 homes in 2025 with a focus on expanding workforce housing in Michigan.

This year they are committed to increasing their production of new single-family homes statewide by 30% over that past average, each new home priced affordably for local workers, helping meet urgent housing needs and strengthening local communities. That represents 250 additional new homes every year for the next decade.

Several recent projects from Allen Edwin Homes reflecting this momentum:

* *Grand Traverse County, MI*: A new development will bring 170 rental units, with 20% reserved for workforce housing, leveraging the state's new Housing TIF law for financial feasibility.

* *City of Hillsdale, MI*: A neighborhood of over 60 single-family homes is underway, with 20% dedicated to workforce housing. The project is supported by the Housing TIF law to ensure long-term housing stability.

* *City of Portage, MI*: More than 100 new homes are planned, with 20% designated for workforce housing—underscoring the city’s commitment to inclusive growth and affordability.
