ACLU Supporter, the House has passed a reconciliation bill that will gut Medicaid and harm millions of people with disabilities, reduce access to abortion and other reproductive health care, deny people access to gender-affirming care, and funnel billions to feed ICE's deportation machine. In short: This bill is a disaster for our civil rights. We can't let Congress cut Medicaid and leave sick people, people with disabilities, and low-income families in the lurch while they fund a horrific and abusive system of mass deportation.
If passed, this bill would go far beyond gutting Medicaid – an already devastating possibility. It would pour unprecedented funds into an immigration machine that tears apart families, detains children, and throws people in foreign prisons without evidence. It would block Medicaid patients from gender-affirming care. It would restrict access to preventive health care by blocking Medicaid patients from seeking care at Planned Parenthood health centers and impose a ban on abortion coverage in the private health insurance marketplace. And it would do all this while taking health care from millions of people with disabilities, seniors, and low-income people, jeopardizing Medicaid coverage for 10 million people. The state of health insurance in this country is already awful. Every day, people have to ration their medications, miss essential treatments, and go without the care they need. This bill will make things even worse. Medicaid is a lifeline for more than 70 million people, including more than 15 million people with disabilities. Medicaid pays for mental health services, treatment for opioid use disorder, and the care workers that allow our disabled and aging neighbors to live in and work in their homes and communities instead of dehumanizing institutions. With thanks for all you do, Deirdre Schifeling |
