Hey John —

The long struggle to defend Justice Allison Riggs’ victory in the North Carolina Supreme Court election is finally over — and democracy won.

Now that the dust has settled, here are my five quick takeaways from this saga:

1. We came so close to having an election stolen. This was a deliberate test run for a nationwide Republican strategy, and we have to be ready for them to try to steal future elections by retroactively throwing out legally cast ballots in Democratic areas.

2. One of the lessons of January 6th is that even though an effort to overthrow democracy failed once, you have to prepare for the people behind that effort to keep trying. Not only are many people who supported the Big Lie and the chaos of that day still in power, they're also still actively trying to undermine democracy. What just happened in North Carolina is egregious and dangerous, and we need to be vigilant about making sure no one gets away with trying it again.

3. If you've ever doubted the importance of state supreme courts, just look at how far MAGA will go to control them, from Elon Musk spending nearly $25 million trying to elect the Trump-endorsed candidate for the Wisconsin Supreme Court, to a losing judicial candidate in North Carolina trying to throw out people’s legally cast ballots to overturn an election in order to obtain a seat on that state’s highest court. We know that having fair-minded justices is critical to having fair maps — and they know that too.

4. With Justice Riggs' re-election now official, Democrats have a fighting chance to take back the North Carolina Supreme Court before the 2030 redistricting cycle. Republicans currently have a 5-2 majority on the court, but this win shows us the path to flipping that majority in 2028, just before the court is expected to play a significant role in defining the next decade’s maps. Now it’s on us to put in the work, just like we did to win back the high court in Wisconsin.

5. The work to fend off election thefts and elect more state-level fair maps champions doesn’t happen without support from donors like you: [[link removed]]. Thank you for all you’ve already done this year. But the work continues. We have a playbook that works: Fight back wherever anti-democracy forces are operating, and end gerrymandering by winning state-level elections for positions that play powerful roles in the redistricting process. 
So what now? We build on this victory and double down on our commitment to the work. We are in a perpetual fight for a more representative democracy — and we must not let up.
