Listen, I know your inbox is basically a firehose of political emails right now, so I’ll cut to it: If we lose control of our elections, we lose everything. And I don’t mean that in a vague, “democracy is at risk” kind of way. I mean, literally, we could end up with a democracy run by people who don’t believe in democracy. And the folks who stand between functioning elections and total chaos? Secretaries of State. These are the people who run our elections, count ballots, certify results, and step in when our democracy is on the line. In 2026, 26 Secretary of State races will be on the ballot, including in key swing states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. So it’s no surprise that Republicans are already preparing to run election deniers and MAGA conspiracy theorists for these offices. Next stop: letting arsonists apply for firefighter jobs – except the fire is democracy and we’re all in the house. Who we elect in 2026 will be the ones in charge when voters head to the polls in 2028’s presidential election – and that could make all the difference in whether that election is free and fair.
