John,
Since President Trump’s return to office, he and his allies in Congress have launched sweeping attacks on the judiciary, including targeting specific judges who have ruled against the administration and coming ever closer to defying court rulings.
They’ve gutted the General Services Administration, which is responsible for meeting custodial, maintenance and other basic needs of federal buildings – including courthouses – nationwide. They’ve laid the groundwork to potentially ignore judicial rulings they don’t like.
They’re even attempting to politicize the U.S. Marshals Service which is tasked with protecting judges and enforcing court orders.
We can’t let them normalize this, John. That’s why CREW is taking several actions to protect the separation of powers and judiciary, which we’ll break down below.
Recently, Trump nominated Gadyaces Serralta to serve as director of the Marshals Service.
John, it is critical that the Senate ensures Serralta will prioritize the security and enforcement needs of the federal judiciary over the political wishes of Donald Trump.
That’s why we submitted testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee urging them to ensure that any newly confirmed director of the Marshals Service will faithfully perform the USMS’s primary functions and serve the needs of the judiciary.
The Trump administration has increasingly used the Marshals to achieve its own policy goals, particularly in immigration enforcement, and we need to ensure that the Marshals will adhere to their commitment to enforcing judicial orders.
That’s why we endorsed a bill that was just proposed by Senator Booker to transfer control of the Marshals Service to the court system itself.
We’re also monitoring the Trump administration’s efforts to gut GSA and potentially flout court orders, providing analysis about how courts can continue to press the Trump administration to comply with the law in Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s case and urging Congress to appropriate more money for judicial security.
John, the wellbeing of our democracy depends on a functioning judiciary and strong checks and balances that allow our government to operate free from political interference.
