John,
I hope this email finds you in the midst of a great Memorial Day.
As we take time to relax and remember the sacrifices made by American soldiers I’d like to take a moment to reflect upon what these brave men and women laid it all on the line for.
When our greatest generation stormed the shores of Western Europe, the Pacific, and North Africa it was because our Democratic system faced an existential and irreconcilable threat from a competing system of government: fascism.
In fascism the peoples say is replaced with that of elites placed at the heights of finance, industry, military, and media/culture. Rights implicit to the American system such as free speech, voting, assembly, and to dignity are overruled by repression.
In our current moment we face a fascist threat to our democracy and way of life unprecedented since the times of the 1930s and 40s.
We presently have a window to ensure that the sacrifices of our veterans were not made in vain. However, that window is rapidly closing…
I’d like to leave with you a quote from President Kennedy, one I’m sure you may know, but one which we sadly here less and less in this day and age: "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country"
So as you continue with your memorial day please not only reflect on the sacrifices made by our veterans but also on what you can do to ensure that what they fought to protect is not squandered.
