THIS DAY IN HISTORY
Courage Remembered: Memorial Day

Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, is a time to honor the brave Americans who gave their lives for our freedom. From the Battle of the Bulge to the sands of Iwo Jima, over 400,000 Americans perished in World War II alone, securing peace and ending tyranny.

One such hero was Sergeant John Basilone. During the Guadalcanal Campaign, he held back thousands of Japanese soldiers, earning the Congressional Medal of Honor. Later, at Iwo Jima, he single-handedly destroyed a Japanese blockhouse and saved a trapped tank under heavy fire, earning the Navy Cross before making the ultimate sacrifice.
