The Week in Review

Happy Sunday!

I hope you had a wonderful week. I am grateful to serve you all in the 119th Congress. Read below to see what I’ve been working on this week.

House Passes President Trump's One, Big Beautiful Bill

This week, the House passed H.R. 1, the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act, by a vote 215-214-1. I voted in favor of the bill ultimately to advance President Trump’s policy priorities. This bill leaves much to be improved, so I implore my Senate colleagues to do the work necessary to fulfill our promises to the American people.

Despite my concerns about the bill, I fought hard for some of the policy wins and will strive to ensure they are included in the final package.

The bill will combat rogue judges issuing detrimental nationwide injunctions by incentivizing enforcement of Rule 65(c) of the Federal Rules for Civil Procedure. Congress must work to ensure that President Trump is not thwarted by activist judges, and my included provision will aid in that task.

Policies from my Fund and Complete the Border Wall Act are also included in H.R. 1. Components include establishing funding for the U.S.-Mexico border wall by taxing foreign remittance transfers and rightsizing immigration fees. Completing the border wall and securing the border were core promises of President Trump and I am glad my provisions can support those efforts. The One Big, Beautiful Bill will now be debated, amended, and voted on by the Senate. I’ll keep you posted.

Backwards on the Beltway: Op-Ed

President Trump was given a mandate by American voters, not because he minced his words, but because he's a straight shooter.

The One Big, Beautiful Bill Act extends the tax reductions in the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, and that must happen. In fact, it could have and should have already happened. But the warts on this bill have us looking backward and weaving all over the road.

RedState published my op-ed, and the full piece may be read here.

Speaking at the Jewish Heritage Celebration Luncheon

House Oversight Committee Activity

The Oversight Committee held a markup and passed my bill, H.R. 67, the Modernizing Retrospective Regulatory Review Act, out of committee. My bill requires the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), acting through the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA), to issue guidance on how agencies can use technology to more efficiently, cost-effectively, and accurately carry out retrospective review of existing federal regulations that are obsolete, redundant, contain typographic errors, or overlap with other such regulations.

This bill builds on President Trump's deregulatory agenda, cutting red tape, restoring accountability, and putting American businesses first. Under his leadership, we've seen how pro-growth policies lift burdens and unleash opportunity. H.R. 67 carries that mission forward. American businesses must be free to grow without being buried under outdated duplicative rules from the D.C. swamp.

I’m grateful to Chairman Comer and my colleagues for favorably passing my bill out of committee, and I look forward to passing H.R. 67 out of the House soon. Click the image below to hear more about my bill:

In addition to H.R. 67, the Oversight Committee also passed the following out of committee:

  • H.R. 580, the Unfunded Mandates Accountability and Transparency Act;
  • H.R. 689, the Full Responsibility and Expedited Enforcement (FREE) Act;
  • H.R. 884, Prohibits individuals who are not citizens of the United States from voting in elections in the District of Columbia and repeals the Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2022;
  • H.R. 2096, the Protecting Our Nation’s Capital Emergency Act;
  • H.R. 2409, the Guidance Clarity Act;
  • H.R. ___, Requires the Government Accountability Office to produce a report on esophageal cancer;
  • Various Postal Service measures.

The Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets held a hearing titled “The JFK Files: Assessing Over 60 Years of the Federal Government’s Obstruction, Obfuscation, and Deception.” My colleagues and I examined newly declassified files released by the Trump Administration, heard expert witness testimony on the tragic assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and examined the federal government’s lack of transparency surrounding the release of classified information to the American public.

The testimony confirms that the government’s overclassification of JFK records has clouded the truth, leaving Americans skeptical and clarity out of reach. We heard how agencies buried documents, obstructed Congress, and silenced witnesses, muddying the facts for decades. This erodes trust. Thoughtful classification can protect our nation while delivering the transparency we deserve. As we process these revelations, we must demand solutions and reforms to end needless secrecy.
