Hi friend,
I know there is a lot of news coming out of Washington right now, where Republicans have spent the last few weeks debating how many people they can kick off Medicaid, how many children they’re comfortable going hungry after they cut SNAP, and just how far they are willing to go in making these cuts in order to give a tax break to Trump’s billionaire friends. I have been loudly pushing back on the harm this administration is causing Americans and I won’t stop using my voice in committee hearings, at rallies, town halls, and in the media to uplift the issues impacting people in my district.
So in this week’s edition of the Patriot Weekly, I want to talk about some work we’re doing to deliver much needed resources to the Hudson Valley by investing in our railroad infrastructure and supporting local police departments. I also have an update on the budget bill that just passed the House and how it will hurt families in the Hudson Valley and across the country.
As always, I am tremendously grateful for the responses to these newsletters. This is a moment that requires people from every background to stand up and FIGHT. For me these updates help me remain connected to you, they allow me to give some behind-the-scenes into my work, and they facilitate getting direct feedback about the issues that matter most to you. Thank you for reading and engaging.

What's going on
Hudson Valley
[link removed] [[link removed]] We have thousands of miles of freight and passenger rail in the Hudson Valley, and more than a hundred railroad crossings in NY-18 alone. But way too many of those crossings are in desperate need of safety upgrades. Several are completely ungated, lack warning lights, and have led to numerous fatal, avoidable crashes over the years. What I’m doing: As it stands, if no action is taken, funding for safety measures at rail crossings will expire next year. This is an issue that hits home for the Hudson Valley, where there are more than 100 railroad crossings across my district. I brought this issue to attention at a House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee hearing. I’m pushing to not only renew this critical program, but get more funding to communities across the region. What you can do: Without this funding, we will see even more accidents at rail crossings. I would urge you to contact your representative, especially if they serve on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee alongside me, and urge them to push to renew and expand the Railroad Crossing Elimination Program.New York
[link removed] [[link removed]]I’ve written to you before about my community survey investigating Optum and the level of care patients across the Hudson Valley have been receiving. The responses have been a case study into how corporate consolidation and greed is ruining healthcare for practitioners and patients across New York. Other representatives are calling out that same greed and corruption from United, Optum’s parent company. But now the Justice Department is delaying its investigation into UnitedHealth – and it’s American families who pay the price.
What I’m doing: After the responses I received from my community survey – disabled children unable to get treatment, mothers waiting almost a year for a cancer diagnosis, amilies slammed by thousands of dollars of overcharges, and more – my office submitted our findings to the Department of Justice. So when I heard that the DOJ has delayed their investigation into United’s parent company, I was floored. This is unacceptable, and I have written a letter to Pam Bondi urging her to and the DOJ to do their jobs and make sure this investigation continues without delay.
What you can do: Here’s the thing – UnitedHealth is the largest healthcare company in the United States and too often when someone is trying to navigate their own healthcare, they’re doing it within a system built for profit: United owns the insurance company, United owns your doctor, United owns the pharmacy and United owns the software that processes your data. And they use it all to keep prices high and drive quality down. But with issues as personal as health care, there is power in storytelling. If you haven’t submitted a response to my survey, I would ask you to do so. And I would encourage you to utilize your own voice by sharing stories on social media or amplifying some of the responses my office found by sharing articles like this one. [link removed] [[link removed]]This week, House Republicans voted to pass Trump’s budget bill. Once again, Trump and House Republicans are prioritizing their billionaire buddies instead of helping hard-working Americans, who are already getting hit with rising costs from Trump’s disastrous tariffs. This bill is a triple-whammy: it makes devastating cuts to food and healthcare programs while driving up costs for everyone; gives massive tax breaks to big corporations and the ultra-rich instead of the middle class; and irresponsibly adds over $5 trillion to the national debt. It is fundamentally unfair and un-American: Families will lose health care. Hospitals will close. Kids will go hungry. All so the wealthiest 0.1% can get even richer..
What I’m doing: I have been saying for weeks that if House Republicans tried to pass a budget that hurt Hudson Valley families, I would be a resounding NO vote, and that’s exactly what I did. In committee hearings, in media appearances, and on my social media platforms, I brought attention to just how disastrous this bill would be for families in the Hudson Valley and across the country.
What you can do: There is still a chance to course-correct. The budget has to pass the Senate. We need to be LOUD and UNITED in urging the Senate to reject this reckless bill that benefits that wealthiest .1% at the expense of everyday Americans.
Going on offense
[link removed] [[link removed]] I am continuing to use every platform available to me to call attention to what’s happening in Washington and the Hudson Valley. I will continue speaking out about what’s happening in Washington, the issues we’re seeing on the ground, and how you can stay involved and engaged. Keep the faith, keep up the fight, and thank you for reading!
