Despite its name, Trump’s Energy Department just said that the environmental impacts of natural gas export facilities fall outside of its authority.
They didn’t even bother denying the incredibly damaging impacts, such as air pollution in communities. Instead, they just claimed that it’s not their problem.
Relinquishing responsibility for an issue doesn’t make it go away. Our SEEC climate champions are on the frontlines of safeguarding against air pollution, which disproportionately impacts young children and low-income communities. SEEC Vice Chair Rep. Sean Casten (IL) along with SEEC Members Rep. Jared Huffman (CA) and Rep. Jennifer McClellan (VA) have led the charge on calling out natural gas exports as not being in public interest, both because of the pollution they create and also because sending our natural gas overseas increases energy costs on American households.
Letting natural gas export facilities operate without accountability is a lose-lose for the American people. Not only will they pollute local communities, but they will ship jobs overseas, reduce our energy independence, and accelerate pollution globally. That’s small potatoes compared to what Republicans are after: growing the bottom line of multinational fossil fuel companies.
