John,
I think there’s a reason Alex’s exchange with Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa resonated so much. He asks her extremely simple questions―and she refuses to even defend her votes.
Do you have any comments on the four hospitals in your district that are gonna close because of the cuts to Medicaid?
Do you have any comment on the health care that 67,000 people in your district are gonna lose?
Does it concern you that you only won your election by 800 votes?
Remember: The House bill passed by a single vote―which means any Republican defection can block it. The Senate will make its changes to the bill, and then the House will have to vote again. That person blocking the bill could be Rep. Miller-Meeks, who was elected by just 800 votes, but so far she has voted to close 4 hospitals in her district and kick 60,000+ people off their health care.
We’re applying pressure on Rep. Miller-Meeks, and Republicans around the country, during Memorial Day recess. We can stop the largest Medicaid cuts in history―but it’s going to take all of us. Can you chip in today?

John,
The House of Representatives passed their budget reconciliation bill this week, a hodgepodge of policies that would kick 13.7 million people off their health insurance and give millionaires and billionaires a tax break.
If this bill passes the Senate, it would be the largest Medicaid cut in history AND the largest tax cut for the wealthy in history. Then as it goes into effect, it would trigger the largest across-the-board Medicare cut in history too.
I spent most of this week on Capitol Hill talking to members of Congress about the bill. One exchange, with Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa, has been viewed more than 1 million times on TikTok:
In the video, you can watch Rep. Miller-Meeks walking faster, almost breaking into a run, and then mashing the button for her members-only elevator while I asked her about the four hospitals in her district that will close if this bill is enacted.
If she thinks she can keep avoiding tough questions when she returns to Iowa for Memorial Day recess, she’s got another thing coming. We’re working with her constituents, who are already rallying outside a hospital that is likely to close if Republican Medicaid cuts go through:
This is what we do. We keep unrelenting pressure on Members of Congress when they’re considering cutting our earned benefits, and we stay in touch with grassroots activists around the country to make sure they know the impacts of these bills.
Whether it’s in Washington DC or Newton, Iowa, we’re making sure every American knows what’s at stake in this fight. Can you rush a donation to fight for Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid?
