ANDREW IN THE NEWS Next test for higher SALT cap: Republican resistance in the Senate " A $40,000 cap on state and local tax deductions that was negotiated by a group of New York House Republicans and passed by the House Thursday faces its next hurdle in the coming weeks — Senate Republicans who are pushing for a lower limit...Reps. Andrew Garbarino (R- Bayport) and Nick LaLota (R-Amityville) say the coalition of blue-state House Republicans who helped negotiate the increase have made it clear that any changes to the SALT provisions will derail passage of the mega-bill when it comes back for a final House vote...[Speaker Mike Johnson] 'told us he’s been speaking with Thune, Thune knows how important this is, and this is one of the things that is not negotiable,' said Garbarino, who along with LaLota and Reps. Mike Lawler (R-Pearl River), Elise Stefanik (R-Schyulerville), Tom Kean (R-N.J.) and Young Kim (R-Calif.), helped broker the proposed new cap...Garbarino said he, LaLota and other SALT caucus Republicans plan on lobbying Senate Republicans to keep the negotiated cap when Congress returns from the Memorial Day recess. LaLota, when asked about Senate Republican opposition to a cap increase, said in a phone interview that he and Garbarino would continue to "hold the line" and withhold support for an overall package if the $40,000 figure changes. KEEPING UP WITH CONGRESS House Approves SALT Deal Negotiated by Andrew Following weeks of intensive negotiations, Andrew led his colleagues in securing an agreement to increase the SALT deduction cap by 400% — a deal that would provide significant tax relief to Long Island families. This hard-won compromise will allow the vast majority of NY-02 residents to deduct their state and local taxes up to $40,000 each year. Andrew made a promise to Long Islanders, and with this agreement, he delivered. The House approved the significant SALT cap increase this week, and now it’s up to the Senate to review the legislation and get it over the finish line. Combating Wildlife Trafficking Earlier this week, Andrew and Rep. Mike Quigley of Illinois introduced the Wildlife Confiscations Network Act of 2025, legislation to support federal law enforcement in combating wildlife trafficking and ensure the proper placement and care of confiscated live animals. In a statement Andrew said, "Our border agents and federal inspectors work tirelessly to stop illegal wildlife trafficking, but they lack the resources and infrastructure to properly care for seized animals. This bill will strengthen the federal response, relieve logistical burdens on law enforcement, and ensure that trafficked animals are treated humanely and professionally.” Learn more here.
