I’m a racial, religious, ethnic minority immigrant with 29 letters in my name. Donald Trump and his far-right pals don’t want to see folks like me succeed, let alone in the U.S. Senate.
Growing up in Peoria, Illinois, I never felt like I fit in because of my identity. When times became tough, we lived for a time in Public Housing to keep a roof over our heads and depended on SNAP to eat. ![]() I got my first role in Illinois politics working for another guy from Illinois with a funny name on his first campaign for Senate – Barack Obama. I decided then that I would spend my life working to improve the lives of families like mine and protect the benefits we depended on. ![]() When I met my wife, Priya – while I couldn’t tell you the name of the restaurant where we had our first date – I knew I was going to marry her. Together, we have 3 incredible kids (who keep us entertained to say the least). ![]() And nearly a decade ago, I made the decision that it was time to take my first big step into politics, and I ran for Congress. ![]() I’ve proudly served the people of IL-08 for the past 8 years, but now, I’m ready to take on my next big challenge – being your next US Senator from Illinois. Because, even during my time in Congress, I’ve felt like an outsider. And that’s why I’m running for Senate, John. To be a voice for all of the racial, religious, ethnic minorities and immigrants with “funny” names like mine. And be a voice for all those who feel like they don’t have one with today’s government. I refuse to let Donald Trump silence me or any minority in this country.
