It’s official: House Republicans just rammed through one of the largest cuts to health care in US history and will gut care for babies, kids, moms, and families.
Sam and I have been crisscrossing between Colorado and DC, raising him at home whenever possible, and speaking out in DC against the GOP’s budget scheme whenever necessary.
In fact, this week marked Sam’s 16th plane ride traveling back and forth, and he’s barely four months old.
He also stuck it out for over 24 hours, overnight, at the US Capitol with me while I advocated for amendments and voted against the largest handout to the wealthiest people in the history of the world on the backs of the rest of us.
Republicans claim to be the party of “family values,” but that could not be further from the truth when you look at their priorities. If this bill is passed by the Senate and signed into law, nearly 14 million Americans will lose their health insurance. All of us will pay higher premiums, co-pays, and deductibles. The 64 million women and children who rely on Medicaid will be forced to navigate complicated, unnecessary red tape to keep their coverage. Many rural hospitals and nursing homes will shutter their doors. And 16 million children will go hungry because of cuts to SNAP benefits.
I don’t want to mince any words: This is a devastating setback for millions of women and children across the country. And these costs will bring skyrocketing health care costs for all of us.
That’s why Sam and I will continue to do what we can to change the hearts and minds of people in Washington.
If you’re with us, Sam and I would be so grateful to have your support in this fight. I am under no impression that winning this battle will be easy, but we can’t just sit back and give up. There is too much at stake to not give this fight everything we’ve got.
