It’s now been 78 days since Mahmoud Khalil was arrested by ICE and taken from New York to an immigration detention center in Louisiana.
Just imagine that. 78 days behind bars despite never being charged with a crime or a violation of your permanent residency status. 78 days behind bars simply because you exercised your constitutional right to speak out against the US-backed genocide unfolding in Gaza.
Sign on nowIsrael’s assault on Gaza over the last year and a half has shocked the conscience of many. Images of death and destruction have been constant, while humanitarian aid is continually blocked by the Israeli government and Palestinian families are left to starve.
Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian himself, had every right to lead protests at Columbia University against what a consensus of scholars now agree is a genocide — a genocide made possible by US weapons and aid.
But the Trump administration has decided to use our immigration system as a tool to enforce their uncompromisingly pro-Israel position. That’s why Mahmoud and hundreds of others who have spoken out have been detained or had their visas revoked.
We must call this what it is: forced disappearance for nothing more than constitutionally protected speech. It is a clear assault on First Amendment rights.
