Big Beautiful Bill Passes the House
This week, the House passed H.R. 1, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. This bill delivers tax relief, government efficiency, and border enforcement. As part of our efforts, the House identified more than $1.5 trillion in cost savings while strengthening critical programs and delivering meaningful savings for American families. Importantly, we were able to do this while protecting vital programs like Social Security and Medicare.
Here are some of the ways this bill, if signed into law, will help Wisconsin families.
Keeping Americans Safe
The House bill invests $140 billion in border security:
- 8,000 new border and customs officers.
- Expansion of ICE detention facilities.
- $46.5 billion to build and modernize the wall.
Strengthening Medicaid
The legislation passed yesterday will protect and strengthen Medicaid. It is critical we focus government programs on the individuals they are designed to serve. The House passed bill will protect pregnant women, disabled Americans, and children. Key reforms will protect Medicaid for vulnerable individuals. The reforms will also encourage and reward work.
- Protecting Medicaid for every American who needs and deserves the program.
- Ensuring citizenship verification for program recipients.
- Instituting a 20 hour per week work requirements for able-bodied, childless adults.
These are critical reforms to strengthen and preserve Medicaid for the people it was designed to serve.
Protecting Social Security and Medicare
The One Big Beautiful Bill protects Social Security and Medicare benefits for our seniors. I remain committed to protecting these programs. In fact, the Senate Byrd Rule explicitly prohibits Social Security from being changed through reconciliation.
Lowering Costs for Families
I'm focused on helping working families afford the things they need. Every dollar we save helps working families.
At the end of this year, without action, taxes would rise on average $1,500. This bill prevents the tax hike and protects working families.
This legislation will keep the current tax cuts in place and will deliver additional savings:
- $4,000 tax deduction for seniors.
- No tax on tips.
- No tax on overtime.
All of these new reforms ensure that Wisconsin workers and families can keep more of your hard-earned paycheck. I look forward to continuing to find ways to lower costs for families.
The reconciliation bill now heads to the Senate for passage.
