Voting NO on GOP Budget Bill
This week, House Republicans passed a budget bill that is a massive giveaway to billionaires at the expense of working people. It includes the largest cuts to Medicaid and SNAP we’ve ever seen. That means thousands of families in our district could lose their healthcare and food assistance at a time when so many are already struggling to make ends meet. It also contains harmful provisions that open new mining leases on the Boundary Waters Wilderness, rolling back clean energy investments, and pumping even more money into ICE and defense contractors. I’ll never stop fighting for a budget that protects the vulnerable, uplifts working families, and puts people over profits.
Defending Immigrants
I stood alongside colleagues and advocates to publicly oppose the anti-immigrant provisions in the House budget reconciliation bill. House Republicans budget introduced policies that would impose fees on asylum seekers, allocating billions to expand detention facilities, and diverting resources from essential services to give billions to ICE. The bill proposes a $1,000 fee for asylum applications and a $550 charge for work permits, placing burdens on vulnerable people fleeing persecution. It also seeks to allocate $45 billion to ICE for detention expansion, a move that would significantly increase the agency's capacity to detain individuals, including families and children, without due process. I will not support a bill that doubles down on mass detention and deportation while gutting health care, education, and food assistance.
Ban Congressional Stock Trading
I took to the House floor to speak out against one of the clearest conflicts of interest in our democracy, members of Congress trading individual stocks. It is unacceptable that Members of Congress, who are entrusted with the public’s confidence and access to privileged information, are allowed to buy and sell stocks while in office. The American people deserve to know that lawmakers are making decisions in the public interest, not padding their own portfolios. I’ve long called for a full ban on congressional stock trading. Watch my remarks here.
Workers Deserve Protection
At a recent Education and Workforce Committee hearing, I spoke on the importance of fully funding OSHA and NIOSH, the agencies charged with protecting workers’ health and safety. No job should ever be a death sentence. But under DOGE, these agencies are being reduced. That means fewer inspections, weaker protections, and more lives at risk. OSHA and NIOSH save lives and I’ll keep fighting to make sure every worker, in every job, can count on the basic right to a safe workplace. Watch my remarks here.
Roundtable Discussion with African Ambassadors
Our connections to the African continent are both historical and political. I joined my colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus for a meaningful discussion with African Ambassadors on the role of the global African diaspora. As Chair of the U.S.-Africa Policy Working Group, I spoke about the work we have led to center diaspora voices and strengthen ties between the U.S. and Africa. From expanding economic opportunity to defending democracy and human rights, our future is deeply connected.

Fighting for the Fifth Casework Success Story - Santanu
At My office recently had the opportunity to assist Sanatu with receiving his social security benefits in a timely manner.
“I filed for Social Security Disability Insurance nearly two years ago and my application had been pending with the SSA’s International Benefits Office for months with no progress. I reached out to Congresswoman Omar’s office for assistance and within a few months they were able to help me arrive at a satisfactory resolution. I’m grateful for your advocacy and assistance through this difficult situation. I’m proud to call you my representative in MN.”
