A sitting Congresswoman. A Black woman. Arrested and charged—for doing her job.
Federal authorities, led by interim US Attorney Alina Habba—a former personal attorney for Donald Trump—have charged Congresswoman LaMonica McIver with two counts of assault following an oversight visit to an ICE detention center in Newark, NJ.
Rep. McIver was exercising her legal right and duty to inspect conditions at the facility. Despite federal law clearly granting members of Congress access for oversight, she was targeted, criminalized, and labeled as “out of control” by Trump himself.
This is a calculated political move designed to intimidate, silence, and humiliate Black women in leadership. When Black women demand accountability, justice, or truth, they're often labeled as angry, aggressive, or criminal. We refuse to accept this.
This is just the next step in Trump’s creep towards a fascist regime. Not only is he kidnapping and deporting people, now he’s throwing unprecedented charges at anyone who is willing to question his racism and extremism.
Rep. McIver's charges are extreme, politically motivated, and entirely without merit. We see this for exactly what this is and we are fighting back.
