At the risk of stating the obvious, I’m not a stay-at-home mother, but I’ve been married to one for nearly two decades.

A recent survey from Motherly found that 24% of mothers today identify as a stay-at-home mom (SAHM), a 9% bump in a single year. The jump is largely attributed to more flexible work schedules and remote job opportunities.

Not surprisingly, however much of an increase, it pales in comparison to the norms of the 1950s and 1960s when upwards of 80% to 85% of mothers were not employed outside the home.

Gallup recently reported that another 22% of mothers would prefer to stay at home if they could financially swing it, and another 38% would prefer a part-time job instead of the full-time one they currently manage.

Stereotypes have long existed about moms who devote their full-time energies to children and the home. From watching soap operas to drinking cocktails to kibitzing over the back fence, fictional movies and television have perpetuated many of these silly myths.

In reality, your typical stay-at-home mother works harder and longer than most high-powered women anywhere else. In fact, here are five common myths about these moms:

1. They’re rich.

It’s true that making the ends meet on a single salary is a lot easier when that one salary is high, but most homes with a single breadwinner and a mom who stays at home actually have less income — and for obvious reasons. On average, even one high salary is usually less than two medium salaries combined.

President Donald Trump signed the Take It Down Act into law today.

The legislation targets nonconsensual sharing of nude and explicit images online.

“This will be the first ever federal law to combat the distribution of explicit images posted without subject’s consent,” Mr. Trump spoke alongside First Lady Melania Trump at Monday’s signing ceremony.

“We will not tolerate online exploitation.”

The Take It Down Act targets three common kinds of online exploitation — “revenge porn,” explicit AI-deepfakes and sextortion — by making it illegal to share, or threaten to share, explicit images of a person online without their permission.

Penalties apply equally to real and AI-generated images.

“With the rise of AI image generation, women have been harassed with deepfakes and other explicit images distributed against their will,” the President addressed AI abuse specifically.

“It’s just so horribly wrong … Today, we’re making it totally illegal.”

Focus on the Family’s Vice President of External Relations, Tim Goeglein, attended the ceremony on Focus’ behalf.

“Those of us at Focus on the Family in Washington have championed this outstanding legislation from the beginning,” he told the Daily Citizen.

A Christian camp in Colorado has filed a lawsuit seeking to prevent the state from forcing it to violate its religious and commonsense beliefs about biological sex.

Camp IdRaHaJe, which derives its name from the song “I’d Rather Have Jesus,” filed a lawsuit on Monday, May 12, to stop Colorado from forcing it “to surrender its religious character, beliefs, and exercise to maintain a license to operate in Colorado just like everyone else.”

The camp, which is being represented by lawyers with Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), has operated in Bailey, Colorado since 1948. It has maintained a resident camp license in the state since 1995.

The Colorado Department of Early Childhood, which issues resident camp licenses, recently amended its regulations requiring children’s camps to “allow campers to access bathing, dressing, and sleeping facilities designated to the opposite sex,” ADF notes.

Indeed, the update regulation states that resident camps must allow campers:

• The use of gender-segregated showers that are consistent with their gender identity.
  
• To sleep in the same room or tent with individuals whose gender identity is consistent with their gender identity.
• The use of gender-segregated toilet facilities that are consistent with their gender identity.

It has long been well-documented how men and male overall well-being is declining in America. Men have been increasingly dropping out of the workforce, dating, school, marriage and family formation, and out of public life in general.

A new article from the Institute for Family Studies (IFS) asks who or what is to blame for the increase in male malaise.

They blame a very culpable culprit: Uncle Sam.

A recent Wall Street Journal article asserts the same.

“Blame government, which showers benefits on able-bodied people who don’t work while at the same time subsidizing college degrees that don’t lead to productive employment. The result is millions of idle men and millions of unfilled jobs — what an economist would call a deadweight loss to society.”

The Journal says this has serious implications for family formation. “Single women might commiserate: A good worker, like a good man, can be hard to find these days.”

IFS states that in 1976, just 5% of young men ages 25 to 40 were not in the workforce. That number has more than doubled in 2024. They explain the problem is even worse for full-time employment among men, saying,

“Over the same period, the share of men in this age range not working full-time rose by 46%, such that now more than 1 in 5 men in this age group are not working full-time. In 2024, 3.8 million men ages 25 to 40 were not in the labor force, and a total of 7.8 million were not working full-time.”
